Zion National Park in Utah has announced an increase in visitor rates, with some fees rising by up to 75 percent. The adjustments will affect frontcountry campgrounds, day-use, and overnight wilderness recreation permits. Additionally, the park will introduce an online reservation system for various activities, including canyoneering and backpacking camping.

The National Park Service (NPS) shared that the rate increases aim to enhance accessibility and visitor services while supporting essential facilities such as restrooms and drinking water systems. Jeff Bradybaugh, Zion National Park superintendent, emphasized that these changes will also contribute to the rehabilitation of campsites and simplify the application process for Wilderness Recreation Permits.

Starting from July 1, 2024, the rates for non-electric campsites at Watchman Campground and South Campground will increase from $20 per night to $35 per night, marking a 75 percent rise. Electric campsites at Watchman Campground will see rates rise from $30 per night to $45 per night, while non-electric campsites at Lava Point Campground will increase from $20 per night to $25 per night.

An online reservation system on Recreation.gov will be implemented for all wilderness recreation permits from Jan. 5, 2024. For instance, the day-use permit for eight to 12 people, including activities like a day hike of the Virgin River Narrows, will change from $25 per group to $10 per person per day.

Overnight permits for activities such as camping in designated wilderness campsites and bivy camping on climbs will also see rate adjustments. Reservations made up to three months in advance, starting Jan. 5, will increase from $5 per reservation to $20 per reservation.
