Tom Daley Returns to Diving Program with Paris Olympics in Sight

Great Britain’s renowned diver, Tom Daley, is eyeing the Paris Olympics in 2024 after rejoining British Swimming’s World Class Programme for diving. The 29-year-old, who took a two-year break after clinching gold in the 10-meter platform event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is the first Team GB diver to secure four Olympic medals – one gold and three bronze.

Daley, having won bronze in the 10m platform at Tokyo 2020, expressed his interest in the Paris Olympics, stating, “I don’t know if it’s going to be possible, but you never say never. Paris 2024 is definitely a goal.” Despite uncertainties about returning competitively, Daley sees it as an opportunity for recreational diving without pressure, acknowledging the need to assess his body’s readiness for the sport.

Having started diving at the age of seven, Daley made his Olympic debut for Great Britain at just 14. In addition to his athletic achievements, he came out as gay in a 2013 YouTube video and has since been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Daley’s decision not to participate in the Commonwealth Games last year was driven by his commitment to spending quality time with his husband and their first son, born in 2018 via surrogate.

Rejoining the podium program offers Daley financial assistance and support for training and competition. Tim Jones, British Swimming’s associate performance director, expressed optimism about the upcoming competition opportunities, envisioning athletes building towards the Olympic Games next summer.
