Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas has committed to another two years with the INEOS Grenadiers, signing a contract extension that will keep him in the saddle until 2025. The 2018 Tour de France champion, who finished second in this year’s Giro d’Italia, has been a stalwart member of the team for 14 years.
Thomas, 37, hinted that this might be his last contract, suggesting possible retirement at its conclusion. However, he emphasized his determination to deliver strong performances over the next two years and expressed his loyalty to the INEOS Grenadiers.
“Although you ‘never say never,’ in my head, this is my last contract – but I know that I still have two more big years in me – and I wouldn’t have continued in a different team,” said Thomas. He praised the team’s understanding of his needs and their shared commitment to achieving success.
“This team understands me and, importantly, knows what it takes to achieve success… We’re an ambitious group and have some big goals ahead. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in again and want to help the team continue to progress.”
Thomas, with an impressive cycling career that includes victories at the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, is determined to maintain his competitive edge. He mentioned the possibility of returning to the Classics or supporting younger talents in Grand Tours, illustrating his willingness to contribute positively to the team.
“I want to continue to be highly competitive in anything really,” Thomas stated. “Maybe look at going to the Classics again or ride [for the general classification] in Grand Tours or help whoever is going to be the next guy coming through, but I just want to have a positive impact on the team.”
As Geraint Thomas embarks on this contract extension, cycling enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing his continued prowess and the achievements he and the INEOS Grenadiers can unlock in the upcoming seasons.
